Sabah PKR made blunders, claims former leader

                        Richard Libun Adou

TUARAN : A former Sabah leader, Richard Libun Adou, has called on Sabah PKR to accept the reality that it has lost the confidence of its partners in Pakatan Harapan.

"What is there left for Sabah PKR to be upset about? The decision has already been made..." he said in a statement here.

Richard, who was Tuaran PKR Information Chief, was commenting on the on-going tussle for the post of PH state chairman between PKR and Upko, which was decided for Upko's Ewon Benedick, through a vote recently.

"What truly matters now is for us to focus our efforts on securing victory in the upcoming Sabah election," said Richard.

He said in the past, PKR Sabah held the crucial position of Head/Chairman of Sabah Pakatan Harapan, but that its leaders made blunders.

"Under Christina Liew's leadership, a catastrophic blunder was made in the Kiulu state constituency (DUN).

"The seat was handed over to Parti Warisan, despite all logic pointing to the fact that it should have rightfully remained a PKR seat," he said, arguing that in the previous election, PKR came within a whisker of winning the seat, losing by a mere 44 votes to the PBS candidate.

"By contrast, when Parti Warisan contested, they only managed to secure around 2,400+ votes. This clearly demonstrates that PKR had a far stronger chance of winning in the KadazanDusun-majority area of Kiulu.

"Christina's decision to relinquish the seat was nothing short of disastrous and has caused a significant setback for PKR. It was an indefensible mistake, and to be blunt, Christina is a hopeless leader.

"I remember this situation all too well because, at the time, I was deeply involved as the PKR Coordinator for Kiulu Constituency and the PKR Information Chief for the Tuaran PKR Division, P.170 Tuaran. I witnessed firsthand the repercussions of that catastrophic decision.

"Mustapha Sakmud, who was the Deputy Chairman of Sabah PKR at the time, failed in his duty to speak up and oppose this disastrous decision.

"He should have challenged his superior, Christina, and prevented such a reckless move," Richard further said.#

Public canning is troubling, say duo

Joint Press Statement
4th January 2025

*Response to a Report that Canning was Carried out in Tawau and Clarification on Sabah's Constitutional Position...*

We refer to the recent statement by the Mufti of Sabah in support of public caning in the state of Terengganu and his alleged remarks suggesting that such practices were previously carried out in Tawau, Sabah.

Such assertions are not only misleading but also deeply troubling as they undermine the secular principles enshrined in the State Constitution of Sabah and the rule of law that governs ~ *the federation as agreed to under the Malaysia Agreement 1063 (MA63)*.

Under MA63, Sabah is not legally an Islamic state.

It was agreed that while Malaysia is a federal constitutional monarchy where Islam is the official religion of the Federation as stipulated in Article 3(1) of the Federal Constitution, this does not make Malaysia, or any of its individual states, an Islamic state in a theocratic sense.

The application of Sharia laws to Sahahans be they Muslim or not, is a violation of human rights and MA63 special rights that Sabah has no state religion as it was to be a secular state.

The breach of human rights is protected by international law under the UN Charter of Human Rights where it is stated that no one should be treated inhumanely and degradingly.

The Human Rights Declaration adopted by the General Assembly in 1975 states that torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment is a violation of human rights.

*Sabah Is Not and Will Never Be an Islamic State*

Sabah is a state within the Federation of Malaysia that operates under a secular framework. The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) guarantees Sabah’s autonomy, particularly on matters concerning religion.

The assertion or insinuation that Sabah could adopt practices akin to those in Terengganu is not only unconstitutional but also an affront to the multicultural and multireligious harmony of our state.

The notion of implementing public caning in Sabah is wholly inconsistent with the 1963 Sabah Constitution (illegally amended), which guarantees equality before the law and the freedom of religion for all communities. Sabah’s governance is rooted in civil law, not *Shariah* law. Any attempt to introduce such measures would constitute a clear violation of the constitutional rights of Sabahans.

** *The Silence of the State Government is Concerning*

The silence of the Sabah State Government on this matter raises legitimate concerns.

Does this silence imply agreement or *condoning* of the Mufti’s assertion?

We urge the State Government to immediately clarify its position and reaffirm Sabah’s commitment to the rule of law, secular governance, and the principles of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

**Our Call to Action*
*
We call upon the State Government to categorically reject the Mufti’s statement and reaffirm Sabah’s secular framework and constitutional autonomy.

We urge all Sabahans to remain vigilant in safeguarding our state’s unity, harmony, and secular identity.

Sabah has always been a beacon of cultural and religious diversity, and we will not allow any party to undermine our shared values or impose practices that have no place in our Constitution or society.

*The imposition of Sharia law in Sabah or Sarawak would be one of the multiple federal fundamental breaches of the founding principles of Malaysia and render MA63 no longer binding.*

*Bopimafo and SSRANZ do not object to Malayans making Malaya an Islamic state but they object to any imposition of a state religion on their territories and urge Sabahans and Sarawakians to re-assess the value and benefit for their countries to remain in Malaysia and that of seeking independence.*

Kebisuan Kerajaan Negeri Membimbangkan

Stop corruption in Sabah's politics !

By Jayson Lisandu, 30-12-2024
KOTA KINABALU : In a joint press statement on 30 Dec 2024, Australia-based NGOs, the Republic of Sabah North Borneo (RSNB) and Sabah Sarawak Rights Australia New Zealand (SSRANZ)  expressed strong support for and commended the bravery and determination of Sabah university students who have proposed a peaceful demonstration against corruption tomorrow, 31 Dec 2024.

Mosses Ampang and Robert Pei who led the two NGOs respectively, said, the students’ activism is a testament to the spirit of Sabah youths, who are refusing to accept the status quo of corruption and injustice in the state.

They said the students' new awakening is in line with the two NGOs' dedication to seeking real self-determination for Sabah and Sarawak, and their firm belief in integrity, accountability, and self-government.

"The students' commitment to demanding accountability is an inspiration to all Sabahans, and we fully support their call for a government free from corruption.

“We urge that these efforts be conducted with fairness and impartiality, ensuring that all forms of corruption are addressed without bias or selective targeting. The future of Sabah rests on the shoulders of its youth, and their efforts must be guided by integrity, transparency, and the pursuit of the greater good," they said.

They opined that it is important to recognise that corruption at the federal level has played a pivotal role in nurturing the culture of corruption that continues to plague Sabah and Sarawak, and that the creation of Malaysia itself was marked by corruption at the highest level.

They also said the historical precedent set the tone for political practices that have continued unchecked at the federal level, which in turn fostered similar corrupt practices in Sabah and Sarawak.

"The political systems in both states have suffered as a result, as the pervasive culture of corruption from the top has trickled down to local governance. This has undermined public trust and fundamentally hindered the growth and progress of both states," they said.

RSNB and SSRANZ, they said, believe that corruption has also facilitated the federal government's control over the two Borneo state governments, undermining their ability to exercise self-government by eroding transparency and accountability.

They further said: "Our NGOs are steadfast in our commitment to combat corruption in all its forms as part of their campaign for Sabah and Sarawak self-determination. Corruption is a cancer that erodes public trust, weakens institutions, and hampers Sabah’s development.

"No individual, political organisation or institution should be beyond scrutiny. Anti-corruption efforts must be inclusive and non-selective, targeting all forms of wrongdoing regardless of rank or affiliation. Transparency and accountability must remain the cornerstone of governance in Sabah".

"As Sabah moves forward, RSNB and SSRANZ call on all Sabahans to unite in pursuit of a just, transparent, and sovereign state. It is only through collective action—free from corruption and external interference—that we can achieve true independence and prosperity.

“We reiterate our commitment to championing these principles and urge all stakeholders—political leaders, institutions, and civil society—to uphold the values of democracy, accountability, and the people’s right to self-determination," they added.#

Public caning, an attempt to terrorise the people into compliance

                         Peter John Jaban

30-12-2024
KUCHING : Sarawak autonomy advocate Peter John Jaban is denouncing recent actions by PAS with respect to both mandatory halal certification for all businesses in Kelantan and, more horrifyingly, the public caning of a middle-aged man in Terengganu, as yet more evidence of Malaysia’s rapid descent into extremism, driven by a small group of power-hungry fanatics. He is calling on all political representatives to stand up for both the Muslim and non-Muslim constituents in their area, most specifically in Sarawak itself, to ensure religious freedoms, human rights and a harmonious multi-cultural and multi-religious society.

Peter John, Deputy President of Global Human Rights Federation Malaysia, said: “The public caning is a watershed moment in our history. It has put on display one of our most barbaric punishments, practised by only a handful of states in the world and, even then, to great outcry by human rights organisations. Now, PAS have put it out in the public domain for all to see, and all for the ‘crime’ of khalwat, a sentence that has divided even Malaysia’s Ustaz on its appropriacy. Saudi Arabia banned this in 2020, but PAS want Malaysia to start? They will be advocating the stoning of women in the town square for adultery next!”

“Why cane this man in public? Even if you accept that this punishment is commensurate to his so-called crime, which I personally do not, the public nature of its delivery can only serve one purpose. That is to create shame, horror and compliance in the general public, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, with PAS setting themselves up as the arbiters of all moral Islamic conduct. This is a country based on fear and not a modern, multi-cultural nation where all can live in peace and harmony. I believe I can speak for all Sarawakians when I say: not in our territory.”

“This is all part of a multi-pronged attack by this extremist party to marginalise the non-Muslims, cutting off their incomes and cultural heritage, while terrorizing the Muslim population into submission. It is not the role of a secular government to impose religious compliance on all parts of the population. If people in Kelantan want to carry on non-halal businesses, surely that is up to them. Then the Muslims can choose not to patronise their business. This is simple free-market economics, something that PAS seems set to suppress in their pursuit of total religious control.”

“In Sarawak, many businesses choose to obtain halal certification, which is an expensive and arduous process. But mandatory halal certification would never be accepted here, not least because it would cripple our economy. Any move to implement this across Malaysia, let alone in Sarawak, would freeze foreign investment, destroy longstanding family businesses, increase unemployment, cut taxation income and send the country into a downward spiral of decay. Our Prime Minister must take his Madani credentials and stand up to this movement. Anything else is the end of Malaysia as we know it.”

“As Sarawak seeks to position itself as a global leader in green energy and the hydrogen economy, and as a multi-cultural territory that is in step with the modern world, PAS is chasing a future of restriction, dogma and state-sponsored violence. PMX Anwar might choose to placate them, but Sarawak Premier Abang Jo should not. Good luck imposing mandatory halal certification in the Sarawak ulu, or even in the city itself for that matter! MBKS alone would become bankrupt overnight. So, here in Sarawak, we must continue to promote inclusive and welcoming communities determined by freedom of choice and personal autonomy. Our Sarawak Muslims are secure in their faith. We welcome all the investment, international concerts and friendly Christmas greetings we can get!#

Belia kekuatan teguh melawan rasuah dan ketidakadilan, kata NGO-NGO

Kenyataan Media Bersama
27 Disember 2024

Sabah’s Youth: The Unyielding Force Against Corruption and Injustice...

We, as the Borneo ethnic human rights and political activist, we stand firmly with the brave and educated young generation of Sabah. Their decision to rise against corruption is not merely a call for justice but a testament to the unyielding spirit of Sabahans who dare to dream of a brighter and fairer future.

The upcoming anti-corruption rally is not just an event; it is a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of injustice, a loud cry against the powers that have long treated Sabah as a tool for their own benefit. It is a resolute stand against corruption that has stripped our state of its dignity, resources, and rights.

Statement of Support

We as human rights and political activist for the Borneo ethnic people, we express our steadfast support for Sabah’s brave and educated youth. Their decision to rise against corruption is more than just a fight for justice; it is a manifestation of Sabah’s unwavering spirit, daring to dream of a brighter and fairer future.

The upcoming anti-corruption rally is not merely an event but a symbol of hope in the face of injustice. It is a resounding cry against those who have long exploited Sabah for personal gain, a clear stand against corruption that has eroded our dignity, resources, and rights.

Why Sabah's Youth are Key to Change

1. Guardians of a New Vision

Sabah’s youth bring a vision untainted by the failures of the past. They see Sabah as a state that is just and equitable, where governance prioritizes the people, not the corrupt elite. Their courage to dream and act ignites the spark for change.

2. Free from the Burdens of the Old System

Unlike the older generations tied to outdated systems, young people are unburdened by compromises and vested interests. Their moral clarity and cultural values make them a force of unwavering integrity.

3. Energy to Fight

With relentless passion and extraordinary courage, Sabah’s young leaders are ready to bear the heavy responsibility of fighting injustice. Their resilience and refusal to retreat send a clear message: Sabah will no longer be a victim of exploitation.

4. Commitment to Moral Ethics

Education has equipped them with knowledge, but their unshakable honesty and cultural values make them the ultimate catalysts for change.

5. Defenders of Justice and Equality

They are not only challenging corruption but also reclaiming Sabah’s rights, resources, and future. Their fight is deeply personal, as they bear the consequences of today’s injustices and will live with the outcomes of tomorrow’s decisions.

Fighting Against the Puppets of Corruption

Sabah has long been oppressed by corrupt and self-serving politicians and influential senior officials who act as puppets of federal leaders. These individuals have betrayed the trust of the Sabah people, prioritizing their personal interests over public welfare.

However, their reign can and will be ended. The brave, dedicated, and morally upright youth of Sabah are the key to breaking this chain. They are the guardians of Sabah’s future, standing firm with the determination to protect our state’s rights, resources, and dignity.

A Historic Turning Point

History has shown that significant changes often come from those courageous enough to fight for them. From the French Revolution to the civil rights movements, youth have always been the driving force of reform. Today, Sabah’s youth are writing their own chapter in this legacy of courage, demanding an end to corruption and injustice with strength that inspires us all.

Conclusion

We are filled with hope and pride to see Sabah’s youth rise to shape the future of our state. Their struggle is not just their own—it is the struggle of every Sabahan who dreams of a fairer and more equitable state.

With education, strong moral values, cultural integrity, and untainted honesty, they are the light piercing through the darkness of corruption and exploitation. Let us stand together with them, for their courage is our inspiration, their fight is our collective struggle, and their victory will mark the beginning of a new Sabah.

The time for change is now. The time for justice has arrived. Together, we will reclaim Sabah’s dignity and ensure a brighter future for the generations to come.

Sekiranya kerajaan terus mengabaikan rintihan rakyat, belia mesti mengambil tindakan sendiri—bukan melalui keganasan, tetapi melalui tindak balas damai yang berkesan.

Press Statement
26th December 2024

*Sabah’s Youth:  Vanguard Against Corruption and Bad Governance
*
When a government indulges in bad governance, abuse of power, and corruption, it is not just an administrative failure—it is a betrayal of the people’s trust and a direct attack on the future of the nation. In Sabah, the youth cannot afford to stand idly by while their future is plundered and their voices silenced. As the torchbearers of tomorrow, the youth must step up, take responsibility, and play a decisive, relentless, and fearless role in reshaping the direction of Sabah.
The youth in Sabah must demand nothing less than good governance—governance that is transparent, accountable, and rooted in integrity. Corruption is not just a flaw; it is a cancer that eats away at economic progress, perpetuates poverty, and destroys public trust. Abuse of power is not merely a political failure; it is a crime against the aspirations of the people, especially the young, whose dreams are stifled under a system that rewards the corrupt and punishes the honest.

*A Call to Action
*If the government continues to ignore the cries of the people, the youth must take matters into their own hands—not through violence, but through powerful, peaceful resistance. Peaceful demonstrations must become a tool of accountability, signaling that the people will no longer tolerate complacency, corruption, and incompetence.
Beyond protests, the youth must educate and mobilize their communities, ensuring the electorate understands the critical importance of electing leaders who are visionary, competent, and ethical. It is not enough to settle for leaders who are merely popular or well-connected; Sabah deserves leaders who are bold, capable, and determined to drive meaningful change.
The youth must also realize that change begins with them. Sitting on the sidelines is no longer an option. They must actively participate in politics, organize movements, and challenge the status quo to ensure their voices are heard. If Sabah is to rise from the grip of bad governance and corruption, the youth must become the architects of that transformation.

*A Warning to Leaders
*To those in power who engage in corruption and abuse, know this: the patience of the people is not infinite, and the youth are watching. Your failure to govern with integrity is not just a stain on your legacy—it is a direct threat to Sabah’s future. The day is coming when accountability will no longer be optional, and the youth will lead that reckoning.

*A Vision for Sabah
*The future of Sabah cannot be left in the hands of those who exploit it for personal gain. It must be forged by a generation of youth who refuse to accept mediocrity, corruption, or incompetence. Sabah has the potential to thrive economically, socially, and environmentally—but only under leaders who prioritize the people over their own interests.
This is not just a responsibility—it is an obligation. The youth of Sabah must rise to the occasion, fight relentlessly for justice and good governance, and build a future where every Sabahan can thrive with dignity and opportunity. Anything less is unacceptable.
