De-gazetting Christian holidays ‘legal’

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu High court has struck off with cost a suit against the Sabah Legislative Assembly for abolishing three Christian public holidays.

The High Court ruled yesterday that the Sabah Government’s decision to abolish Easter Monday, Holy Saturday and Boxing Day as public holidays 34 years ago was in accordance with the State Constitution.

Musa’s govt must push to abolish cabotage

KOTA KINABALU: Luyang assemblyman Hiew King Cheu has called on the Musa Aman administration to take more serious and effective approach in addressing the pressing issue of spiraling consumer goods prices in the state.

He especially urged the state government to strive to abolish the “Cabotage Policy” which many considered the ‘main culprit’ behind the high cost of living in Sabah.

KUALA LUMPUR: Jemaah Menteri hari ini bersetuju untuk menarik balik Rang Undang-Undang Pentadbiran Agama Islam (Wilayah-Wilayah Persekutuan) 2013, kata Timbalan Perdana Menteri Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Rang Undang-Undang tersebut dibentangkan untuk bacaan kali pertama di Dewan Rakyat pada 26 Jun lalu oleh Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

BOPIM to go to court if child conversion Bill is passed -- Jambun

KOTA KINABALU: The Borneo Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BOPIM) has decided to take the same stance as Gerakan that if the proposed amendment to Section 107(b) of the Administration of Islamic Law (Federal Territories) is passed, it will go to court to sue the Federal Government.

The amendments, hinging on the use of the word ‘parent’ instead of ‘parents’, makes it legal for a father or a mother, or guardian, who converts to Islam, to convert to Islam his or her children below the age of 18.

MIGRATE, YOU 'MELAYU BIADAP' - Umno MP tells AirAsia's chief exec

Barisan Nasional's Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin today urged AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman Rani to leave the country for criticising Utusan Malaysia.

Calling Azran "melayu biadap" while debating the royal address in Parliament this morning, Bung Mokhtar said Azran should move if he was not happy in Malaysia.

However, speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia advised the controversial Bung Mokhtar not to use his parliamentary privilege to launch attacks on civilians and government officers who were not in the house to defend themselves.

PENAMPANG: The Administration of the Religion of Islam (Federal Territories) Bill 2013 which was tabled in Parliament last Wednesday has drawn the ire of former UPKO lawmaker, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok.
“I am surprised and disappointed that this Bill has been approved by Cabinet for tabling at Parliament,” he said in a brief statement to the Borneo Insider Saturday.
He added: “The present Bill appears to contravene the Federal Constitution and runs counter to the Government’s transformation plans especially the 1Malaysia concept of acceptance, inclusiveness and moderation.”

I read with faint amusement Idris Jala’s article which appearead in the June 24, 2013 edition of The Star newspaper. Idris Jala in his article discusses seven issues affecting Malaysia today.

Now in a few articles over the coming days, I will attempt to dissect and expose Idris Jala’s article for the rubbish that it is. I will start off now by tackling the first two issues that appear in his article.

Incidentally if you have not already read Idris Jala’s article, I strongly suggest that you do. It is a shining example of how misleading statistics can be and how politicians can literally get away with murder so long as they deny it strongly enough.
