Non-halal food: Teacher hauled over the coals

KUCHING: A senior assistant of a primary school here who allegedly caned a 10-year-old boy for bringing non-halal food to the school got a roasting from angry Sarawakians.

Politicians – Barisan Nasional as well as the opposition – joined the ordinary people in condemning his act of “religious extremism” and want him punished.

The senior teacher of St Thomas Primary School allegedly caned the boy, Basil anak Beginda, for bringing fried rice with pork sausages to eat in school during recess.

Land Development Minister James Masing said Malaysians must respect freedom of religion as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

PKR polls: Rivals upset with candidate's tactics

UPDATED KOTA KINABALU: As PKR members vote for national leadership for the second weekend today, supporters of deputy presidential candidates Zaid Ibrahim and Mustaffa Kamil Ayub are crying foul over the manner their rival Azmin Ali is conducting his campaigns.

“We are quite concerned with what's happening in Sabah today. We will see how things turn out before deciding what to do next,” said Firdaus Christopher, Zaid's special assistant.
The same sentiments were expressed by Mustaffa's men.

“We want the party to ensure that the election process is conducted in a just and fair manner. Right now that is not happening,” said an aide to Mustaffa.

The race for the deputy's post is fiercely contested among the three candidates. Vice-president Azmin, who has the backing of party supremo Anwar Ibrahim, is leading by about 500 votes over his closest challenger Zaid.

Azmin steals a march on rivals in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: The battle to wrest the deputy presidency post went into a crucial stage today when Azmin Ali led the second round of party elections in Sabah, creating a neck-and-neck race with rival Zaid Ibrahim.

Azmin, who is now leading with 1,060 votes from eight divisions from the state, breezed through leaving behind his contender Zaid, who bagged 824 votes, with a majority of 236 votes.

Meanwhile, third contender Mustaffa Kamil Ayub lagged behind with only 40 votes.

Azmin's performance was impressive despite his “unpopularity” in Sabah after a fallout with several divisional leaders who demanded his removal as the party state chief last year.

All set for Azmin-Zaid showdown

PETALING JAYA: A showdown between Azmin Ali and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim in the PKR deputy presidential race in Sabah this weekend will have a far-reaching implications on party adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s influence in the state and Sarawak.

Pundits will be watching closely the PKR elections in Sabah scheduled today and tomorrow, as it would be a good indicator of Anwar’s “strength” in the state.

Party insiders said Anwar had been relentlessly campaigning for Azmin.

A recent ‘Islamic Fashion Show’, staged in the gambling tax haven of Monaco, is being hammered by Muslim clerics, not just for encouraging a lack of modesty in apparel, but for the flaunting of obscene wealth by the Malaysian organisers and guests, who enjoyed a lavish party in the name of charity.
The guests included Sarawak Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud and many of the glittering and bejewelled female members of his own family. These will have all doubtless have attended for free. On the other hand, the businessmen, who were arm-twisted into supporting the event, are said to have had to pay a RM1 million donation!

An Example from our ‘First Family’?
Now Sarawak Report has come into possession of a series of photographs of Sarawak’s ‘First Family’ that may very well send the Muslim clerics into a state of shock. It seems that the sisters, daughters and nieces of our Chief Minister are by no means the sober, modest exemplars of Muslim womanhood in the way that they expect others to behave.

Blue wave sweeps over Batu Sapi and Galas

FULL REPORT KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional has scored a double victory in the Batu Sapi and Galas by-elections, giving Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak's administration a resounding stamp of approval and sending the Anwar Ibrahim-led opposition back to the drawing board.

For the Batu Sapi parliamentary seat in Sabah, BN candidate Linda Tsen won with a landslide victory, chalking up a margin of 6,359 votes over her nearest rival, PKR's Ansari Andullah.

Her majority was even greater than her late husband Edmund Chong's in 2008 when he got 3,708-vote majority. The latter's death in a traffic accident had paved the way for the by-election.

Tsen garnered 9,773 votes while Ansari got 3,414. The other contender in the three-way tussle, SAPP president Yong Teck Lee came in a disappointing third with 2,031 votes despite initial projections that the former chief minister would win the seat.

Quick analysis: The result of this by-election reflect that of the 2008 general election. In 2008, Tsen's late husband Edmund Chong bagged 9,479 votes against his opponent, Independent Chong Kwong Ming's 5,771. In this by-election, the combined opposition has 5,288 votes.
