Activist Daniel Issues a reminder Letter to Magistrate Regarding Peer Mohamad Case

By Jayden Lisandu, 18-8-2024
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah activist Daniel John Jambun today lodged a reminder letter to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate concerning the request for a hearing in the case of an Indian immigrant who was appointed to the board of directors of Sawit Kinabalu, a Sabah state-owned company.

He stated that many are eager to know the outcome of the Peer Mohamad Kadir case, given that he currently holds a Malaysian identity card, is the Chairman of MIC Sabah, and is a director of a state company despite being clearly an Indian citizen, born in India and having grown up there before coming to Sabah and obtaining a Malaysian identity card.

Peer's citizenship is in question because when he testified as a witness at the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) in 2013, he admitted to being born in India and not in Kimanis, Sabah.

"Sabahans want to know what action Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor is taking regarding this matter which has been ongoing for so long. Why allow this situation to persist?," Daniel said today.

In June, Daniel, along with two other activists, Dr. Kanul Gindol and Andrew Ambrose, urged the Sabah Chief Minister to disclose the results of the investigation he announced in 2022 regarding how a foreign immigrant was appointed as a director of Sawit Kinabalu.

Daniel is the President of the Borneo's Plight in Malaysia Foundation, Dr. Kanul is the Chairman of the Gindol Initiative for a Civil Society in Borneo, and Andrew is from the Sabah Indigenous Land Defenders.

Peer is alleged to have received his Malaysian identity card six years after arriving in Sabah from India in 1984. Peer, in his own admission, was born in Chennai, India.

However, his Malaysian identity card states he was born in Sabah, specifically in Kg Bambangan, Kimanis.

Daniel had previously stated, “Hajiji promised in 2022 to investigate this matter but has deliberately forgotten it, hoping the public would also forget.” Peer’s name is still listed as a director of the company to this day.

Andrew, on the other hand, demands that the state government be transparent about the findings and disclose them to the public.

“Peer should explain how he obtained his MyKad. Regardless of his political status, principles of accountability and transparency must be upheld.

“The public has the right to know the truth, and such transparency will help restore public trust in the country’s citizenship and immigration processes,” Andrew said, while also urging the implementation of the Sabah IC Plan to enable the state to manage its population.

Dr. Kanul, in June, expressed his hope that Sabah leaders would not turn a blind eye to Peer’s case.

“I do not want to believe that both the state and federal governments are blind or have become incapacitated in addressing this Peer case,” he said at that time.

Previously, a leader from the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), who is also the political secretary to the Sabah Chief Minister, Jamain Sarudin, had called on the Sabah government to reveal the results of the investigation into Peer.

According to Daniel, he decided to issue a reminder to the magistrate because the case involves public interest and the sovereignty of Sabah.#
