**Joint Press Statement**
**18th June 2024**

**Presence of non-citizens during the demonstration, whose fault?**

The recent statement by the federal Deputy Minister of Higher Learning, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, that non-citizens should not be involved in issues close to the heart of the people of Sabah, has sparked considerable attention.

Firstly, it is important to acknowledge that the presence of non-citizens in the "Kami Mahu Air" demonstration highlights a deeper, more systemic issue. This situation would not have arisen if the federal government had effectively prevented the influx of illegal immigrants into Sabah in the early 1990s.

These illegal immigrants have since become the root cause of many problems in Sabah, including crimes such as illegal squatting on government and private land, power and water theft, drug abuse and trafficking, illegal hawking, and robbery.

Moreover, it is well-documented, particularly through the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI), that these illegal immigrants were provided with documentation under "Project IC." They were subsequently registered in the electoral rolls and participated as voters in the 1994 General Election in Sabah, during which Anwar Ibrahim, then the Deputy Prime Minister cum deputy president of UMNO, was the Director of Elections for Sabah's Barisan Nasional.

These Projek IC voters overwhelmingly voted for BN and reduced PBS seats, eventually led to its downfall in 1994.

While Mustapha’s advice that Sabahans should reject any party involving non-citizens in the upcoming Sabah State election is well-received, it must be underpinned by serious and concrete actions. This can only be achieved if Mustapha and his government commit to a thorough and comprehensive cleanup of the electoral rolls and address the longstanding issue of illegal immigrants residing in Sabah that now outnumbered the Orang Asal population.

We urge the federal government to take decisive action to resolve the illegal immigration problem and eradicate phantom voters in Sabah. The presence of thousands of illegal immigrants undermines the sovereignty of the Orang Asal, the integrity of our elections, and the security and well-being of Sabahans. It is time for real and lasting solutions to ensure that the voice of the true citizens of Sabah is heard and respected.

Sincerely,
