Many are waiting for my ‘I told you so’ article. No, I am not going to write an ‘I told you so’ article. Instead, I am going to remind you of the 13 predictions that were made for the 13th General Election that came true -- although there are actually more than 13 predictions that came true.
NO HOLDS BARRED

Prediction 1: About 80% or roughly 10.4 million of the 13 million or so registered voters would come out to vote.
What did happen: About 10.5 million Malaysians came out to vote on 6th May 2013.
Prediction 2: Barisan Nasional would win more than 130 parliamentary seats but less than the 140 seats it won in the 2008 general election.
Prediction 3: Pakatan Rakyat would not win more than 100 parliamentary seats, as what the bookies predicted, but more than the 82 seats it won in the 2008 general election.
What did happen: Pakatan Rakyat won 89 parliamentary seats.
Prediction 4: Barisan Nasional can still form the federal government with a simple majority in Parliament even if it won just 45% of the popular votes.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional is forming the federal government with about 46-47% of the popular votes.
Prediction 5: Pakatan Rakyat would need to win at least 55% of the popular votes to see a hung parliament and about 60% or so of the popular votes to take over the federal government.
What did happen: Pakatan Rakyat won slightly over 51% of the popular votes and still can’t form the federal government.
Prediction 6: If Pakatan Rakyat retains Selangor there is going to be a power struggle for the post of Menteri Besar.
What did happen: Pakatan Rakyat still cannot decide who should be the Selangor Menteri Besar while all the other states (plus Parliament) are already swearing in their new governments.
Prediction 7: DAP would emerge the largest opposition party.
What did happen: DAP is now the largest opposition party after winning 38 parliamentary seats versus 30 for PKR and 21 for PAS.
Prediction 8: Pakatan Rakyat would lose Kedah.
What did happen: Pakatan Rakyat lost Kedah.
Prediction 9: Perak is a 50:50 situation.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional won 31 state seats in Perak and Pakatan Rakyat won 28 (giving BN a 3-seat majority) with Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat each winning 12 of the 24 parliamentary seats (50:50).
Prediction 10: Terengganu is a 50:50 situation.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional won 17 state seats in Terengganu and Pakatan Rakyat won 15 (giving BN a 2-seat majority) with Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat each winning 4 of the 8 parliamentary seats (50:50).
Prediction 11: There are 165 parliamentary seats in West Malaysia and Barisan Nasional will win 83/85 with 80/82 going to Pakatan Rakyat.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional won 85 parliamentary seats in West Malaysia and Pakatan Rakyat won 80.
Prediction 12: There are 57 parliamentary seats in East Malaysia (including Labuan) and Barisan Nasional will win at least 45 seats and not more than 12 going to Pakatan Rakyat.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional won 48 parliamentary seats in East Malaysia and Pakatan Rakyat won 9.
Prediction 13: Pakatan Rakyat would see a reduced majority in Kelantan.
What did happen: Barisan Nasional increased its seats from 6 to 12 in the Kelantan State Assembly and increased its parliamentary seats from 2 to 5.

DeleteVery true. It will be a long hard road for freedom and independence.
But let us not be disheartened or blame the poor majority too much. They were easily and still are easily misled with a few dollars and lies.
In fact those of us who want change and are educated also bear a share of the responsibility.
We have not done enough to change the people's colonised mindset. Our failure contribute to their not seeing that they can break the colonial chains.
And then we were disunited and fractious. Despite urgings the local Opposition parties could not unite and they lost badly in terms of popular support. The SAPP was rejected by the people because if its past. This is not to say all its members are tainted. There are many good people in there. May be they should consider uniting with STAR.
You have to unite to fight the common enemy!
The intrusion of Malayan parties played a big part in split the anti-UMNO votes. DAP drew many voters away from Sabah party.
As in Sarawak the change to Malayan domination will come with Malayan parties taking over Sabah politics. This means parties like STAR must redoubled their grass root activities to reinforce and spread its views.
The main reason for opposition electoral failure was because as we all know UMNO BN played very dirty and rigged the elections with fake instant voters, fake indelible ink, stuffing ballot boxes, gerrymandering, intimidation and so on.
Have we all wondered how come the BN could sweep 26 seats in Sarawak and 21 in Sabah so easily? It just cannot be done without some behind the scene tampering of the ballot boxes as exposed in Malaya.
In the Ulu areas in the dark night after the votes were cast, they could have easily switched the votes as there were no scrutineers in these distant areas. This is a blind spot which the opposition need to overcome next election (if they are still around).
The results in Malaya were that it was almost 50/50 between BN and Pakatan. If the voting had been honest and fair in Sabah and Sarawak, the BN would have been swept out. The rural mood in Sarawak was supposed to have been swung against BN through the work of Radio Free Sarawak.
Now all people wanting change will have to re-assess their strategies and how they work.
It is a long road ahead. Many have made sacrifices and come this far. When the night is at its darkest, there is still hope and the dawn will come.
Let us all unite to work for a brighter day.
The battle is not over! It just started.
And thanks to West Malaysians for also helping the bn remain in power. And thanks to your mama and papa for helping the bn to remain in power in the 90's which allowed BN to wipe out the opposition and destroy REAL Sabahan's dreams of a better future.
DeleteAnd because West Malaysians kept bn in power back then, BN gave hundreds of thousands of fake ICs to illegal immigrants. So don't forget to also thank those illegal immigrants for helping the bn to remain in power you dumbass.
Sabahans wanted to be free over 2 decades ago. Only now, West Malaysians open their eyes. But it's too late. No one can beat 100,000's of illegal immigrants voting BN.

We just continued to build on the work we have done.
The West Papuans and Palestinians are good examples. Against the odds they continue to fight for their r1ght to self determination after over 50 years of foreign domination.

We need to understand that UMNO was chosen by the British to takeover their colonial responsibilities.
UMNO did more than that and using Malaysia as a cover began its own colonisation programme over Sabah and Sarawak with population and religion re-engineering.
We watched all this happening. We only watched and left it 50 years on before waking up to the danger of "alien takeover".
Now that we are waking up we have to find ways of expelling this foreign colonial burden we have to bear.
Malaysia is one instance of British neo-colonial plan of condemning the Sabah Sarawak people to greater colonial oppression and plunder. And they certainly have wiped their bloodied hands of this corner of the earth.
As intelligent people we can plan and organise. Both are vital ingredients for success in freeing ourselves.
The plan for freedom justice and self-determination start now.

ReplyDeleteSabah Chief Minister Musa Aman has got another feather in his cap from none other than Rosmah Mansor the Prime Minister’s wife, the latter obviously impressed by the efforts towards empowering women and the overall development of the state under the stewardship of Musa Aman.
Ever since coming to power in march, 2003, the quiet and efficient Chief Minister of Sabah has gone about doing his job earning both admiration and respect from even his opposition. Under him Sabah has changed for the better. The image of Sabah as a land of illegals, crime, smuggling, corruption, backwardness and poverty is now a thing of the past. Today there are visible signs of peace and development. This is indeed refreshing. Today Sabah would undoubtedly be the most improved State in the country. It’s indeed a great leap forward and due credit to the leadership of Musa Aman.
When people talk about the new Sabah, they usually refer to the transformation — the State was in complete chaos when Musa Aman first assumed office in 2003. Sabah was more popular for its rampant kidnapping in the east-coast of Sabah, the disorder, illegals and poverty. Things have changed and there is hope and optimism among the people. Not only within but the image of Sabah as perceived by the outsider is positive. This is very important for the future prospect of the State. With order, political stability and strong progressive leadership, investors will have confidence to enter Sabah and this will do a world of good to the local economy.
The other aspect about the leadership quality of Musa Aman, which merits attention and applause, is the reformist zeal that he has demonstrated during his tenure as Chief Minister. This is rare for a politician because the more power you get to wield, the more entrenched your vested interest becomes. In the case of Musa Aman, he has challenged the status-quo on many occasions.

ReplyDeleteTake the case of the RM1.3 billion coal power plant project in Silam, where Musa Aman had scrapped it. Musa Aman said the decision by the state Cabinet to cancel the project was made for health and environmental reasons. Actually the proposed site was close to conservation areas like Darvel Bay Malian Basin, Danum Valley and Ulu Segama which have highly sensitive ecosystems, much of which are still in pristine condition. Darvel Bay itself has a highly diverse marine life and has been called the “Cradle of Coral Evolution” by the scientific community and the location is the genesis of coral reefs running through the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. See, Musa was concern and he specifically said that he cannot trade off the environment for progress and deprive our future generation of Sabah’s natural wonders.

ReplyDeleteIn a unique approach, the failed Silam Power Plant will be replaced by a more Eco-friendly power plant elsewhere. Under the plan, Tenaga Nasional and Petronas was asked to work out a 300 megawatt power plant using gas or fuel probably from Sarawak.

ReplyDeleteMusa Aman is not your usual run in the mill politician who clings on to power. He has an agenda and vision for the peaceful development of Sabah and its people. And he wants to deliver this vision through real performance and not just publicity stunts. He has been able to move away from the old ways of doing politics i.e. based on the status-quo. And in a way this is welcome development not only for Sabah but also for the politics of the country.

ReplyDeleteAs a result, although the others have also led Barisan National to comfortable victories in their states, it is only Musa Aman who won 59 seats out of the 60 state seats contested which is nearly 98.34% success. While Abdul Taib Mahmud of Sarawak carries the millstone of nepotism, cronyism and corruption round his neck, Ali Rustam the other chief minister of little Malacca is seen as being too obsessed with his own Malay “supremacist” and is seemingly still tainted when he was accused of condoning ‘money politics’ whereby he allowed his agent to distribute money to Umno delegates to vote for him in the UMNO elections for the deputy president’s post and was barred from contesting in the Umno elections, and the other chief minister Koh Tsu Koon of Penang lost his own seat and lost the state to Pakatan Rakyat headed by DAP. In contrast, the new star of Sabah has emerged with a remarkably clean record on all these counts.

ReplyDeleteThe entire focus of Musa Aman’s attention was on the states economy, building roads, bridges, deporting and jailing illegals and arresting and charging anti-social elements and encouraging the education of native girls and native boys by providing them with school uniforms, shoes, and computers and empowering women- the six areas (out of many) which earlier chief ministers had neglected. Not surprisingly, there has been a massive response to his appeal to the voters to support the “doer”.
The outcome, therefore, marks the beginning of a new phase in Sabah politics, where the long-prevailing excessive emphasis on race/religion imported from Kuala Lumpur has been diluted – at least partly. True, Musa Aman also played the native card by focusing on the extreme poor natives.

ReplyDeleteAware that he might not be able to make much inroads into the main base comprising KDMs, who make up about 25 per cent of the population, Musa Aman a half-Dusun turned to Pairin the “Huguan Siou” of the KDMs’ and so on.
Notwithstanding this partisan manipulation of natives, there is little doubt that it is still the development projects, political stability and the improvement in law and order which are primarily responsible for Musa Aman’s success.

Take the case of the Batu Sapi Parliamentary elections, it is not impossible that he consciously eschewed Yong Teck Lee’s flamboyance, realising that such bluff and bluster can have a negative impact in the absence of achievement. He also remained aloof from the controversial postures of the kind which the president of SAPP, Yong Teck Lee, took on issues such as the “Sabah for Sabahan” an idea probably borrowed from my good friend Dr Jeffery Kitingan.
It is as the “doer”, who wants to restore Sabah’s reputation as one of the best-run states, that Musa Aman evidently wants to be remembered. The voters had given a thumbs-up to his ambition.

ReplyDeleteSabah government has been identified to be the best example of good governance and the Chief Minister of the state, Musa Aman as being the “key driver” of economic growth and development within the state. In other words, Musa Aman has been appreciated for being an effective chief minister.
Perhaps Malaysia’s best example of effective governance and impressive development is found in Sabah, where Musa Aman has streamlined economic processes, removing red tape and curtailing corruption in ways that have made the state a key driver of national economic growth.

ReplyDeleteMusa Aman has overseen heavy investment in modern roads, bridges and power infrastructure and jobs for Sabahans. He has even reiterated his call repeatedly to the national oil company Petronas to provide adequate opportunities to eligible Sabahans to participate directly in the oil and gas industry. He is monitoring and cooperating with Petronas on how to distribute projects from the oil company to local contractors in Sabah and he is serious to ensure Sabahans would not be merely bystanders to the development that is taking place in the state. Not many chief ministers in the past while in position dare to sound the national oil company Petronas, even though Petronas takes much more than give back to the state and its people.
Despite Sabah being branded the poorest state in Malaysia, Musa Aman had performed well as chief minister by improving the overall economic conditions with an annual growth of more than 8 per cent in recent years.

ReplyDeletePredictions are always in the right place and wrong time or vice versa. Period.
ReplyDeleteEC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said any mark is acceptable as long as it was made within a candidate's column.

Saya percaya fakta akan menunjukkan bahawa pencapaian Barisan Nasional di bawah Mohd Najib jauh lebih baik daripada Pak Lah. Ini bukan bertujuan untuk menjatuhkan air muka Pak Lah. Ini sekadar mahu mengingatkan kumpulan ini bahawa nasihat-nasihat mereka yang telah merosakkan Pak Lah tidak diperlukan dalam arus politik hari ini.

Ini bukan lagi pilihan raya David versus Goliath. Ia sudah menjadi pertembungan dua gergasi. Jik Pak Lah masih lagi Perdana Menteri dan dikelilingi oleh penasihat-penasihatnya yang bodoh itu, kita sudah menjadi pembangkang hari ini.

ReplyDeletePada zaman Pak Lah, UMNO mengalami perpecahan dan menuju kehancuran yang serius sehingga menyebabkan kita kehilangan Kedah, Perak dan Selangor serta kalah teruk di Kelantan. Akhirnya, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad sendiri keluar UMNO sebagai menyatakan kekecewaan beliau kepada Pak Lah. Situasi dalam UMNO hari ini sangat berlainan sama sekali. UMNO kembali menjadi Menteri Besar di Kedah dan Perak.

ReplyDeleteSungguhpun BN hilang 7 kerusi Parlimen lagi, namun UMNO telah meningkatkan kerusi Parlimen yang diwakilinya daripada 79 kerus kepada 88 kerusi. Bagi kerusi Dewan Undangan Negeri juga menyaksikan peningkatan kerusi UMNO daripada 239 pada 2008 kepada 242 pada 2013.

ReplyDeleteA confident Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman, hailed for the state's sound financial management and state Barisan Nasional (BN) supremacy in the 2008 general election, is once again expected to spearhead the coalition in the coming polls against a disunited opposition in the state.
Firing the first salvo after the dissolution of the Dewan Rakyat and the Sabah Legislative Assembly yesterday, Musa, who is also the state BN chairman, called on the people of Sabah not to gamble away their future by experimenting with an opposition government.

The charismatic Musa led the state BN to a thumping victory in the last general election, capturing 24 of the 25 parliamentary seats and 59 of the 60 state seats, leaving the DAP with the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary and Sri Tanjung (Tawau) state seats.
With negotiations for a possible one-to-one contest or showdown between the BN and a united opposition front in Sabah making no headway, the BN is now in a better position to deliver another double political knockout to its opponents in both the parliamentary and state elections.

ReplyDeleteThe seeds of disunity began to appear within the opposition when Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced here recently that Pakatan Rakyat would face the BN on its own without the support of the state-based parties in the coming general election in Sabah.
This did not go down well with the leaders of the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), a local party that left the BN on Sept 17, 2008, which had been hoping for a strategic alliance to face the mighty BN election machinery.
In what is seen as a blow for the opposition, SAPP secretary-general Datuk Richard Yong had subsequently described Anwar's announcement as implying that "PR is over-confident".
“They hold themselves so high that there is no need for cooperation from Sabah parties to campaign against the Barisan Nasional. They have ignored the people’s aspiration for the opposition to go one-to-one against the BN in the coming election,” Yong was quoted as saying.

ReplyDeleteAdding salt to the wound, State Reform Party (Star) Sabah Chapter chairman Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan confirmed joining the fray, and expects his party to be involved in contests of three-corner or more in most of the parliamentary and state seats.
Short of saying that it might further split the opposition votes and give the advantage to the ruling party, Jeffrey said "every political party is free to field a candidate in elections as it is in line with the principle of democracy as practised in Malaysia".
A political analyst, Salman Nurillah, said that based on the prevailing political scenario in the state, with the split and disunity among the opposition parties, the BN seemed to have the upper hand to rule the state for another five years.
Salman, a former civil servant with a law degree from Universiti Malaya and a Master's degree from UiTM, said that with the SAPP and the STAR joining the fray with special focus on the issue of the Borneo Autonomous agenda, this would surely be a boost for the BN to repeat its feat of the 12th general election.

ReplyDelete"Advantage is definitely on the BN side because, in the political arena, whenever there is a split or disunity among the opposition, the ruling party will always get the benefit," he said.
Citing the results of the 2008 general election for the state seats of Likas, Kepayan and Inanam in Sabah, Salman said the split opposition votes gave victory to the BN.
"I believe things like this will happen again in the coming general election," he said, adding that either Pakatan Rakyat or SAPP or even STAR candidates would turn out to be the spoiler for the opposition votes one way or another.
Another factor that gives the advantage to the ruling party is the BN government's seriousness in handling the security issue, particularly the terrorist intrusion in Lahad Datu.

"With the government's decision to increase the security personnel to guard the sovereignty of the state, particularly in the east coast as well as the implementation of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), it brings out the confidence of the people, especially voters, in the government.
"They feel safe as security is under control and are convinced of the government's concerted efforts to avoid similar incidents in the future," he added.
Salman said the feel good factor towards the good administration of the Sabah government under Musa, especially in bringing about development in all aspects for the people and the acceptance of the new transformation policy implemented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, the brainchild of the 1Malaysia concept, would also contribute to the BN's victory in the polls.
He concurred with the statements by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin that Najib had done a lot for the BN and the country as the prime minister in terms of political and economic transformation since he took over the helm.

ReplyDeleteHowever, Salman predicted that the BN would face a tough time to recapture the DAP-controlled areas of Kota Kinabalu and Sri Tanjung as well as face a strong challenge from the opposition in the urban and suburban areas.
He said these included the parliamentary seats of Sandakan, Tawau, Beaufort, Tuaran, Penampang, Sepanggar and Pensiangan.
"Of course, with proper selection of the so-called 'winnable candidates', the Barisan Nasional will be able subdue the opposition in these areas," he said.
