What’s the deal on bridges, Musa?

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak had announced two
bridges to be built in Tuaran for RM18 million,
but now it is RM16 million for one.
By Joseph Bingkasan
KOTA KINABALU: A Sabah pro-opposition MP is asking Chief Minister Musa Aman to explain why only now one of the two promised bridges is going to be built in Tuaran.
Wilfred Bumburing said there were supposed to be two bridges to be built along the Tuaran River both totaling about RM18 million but the Musa had only announced one.
“The announcement to build the sports complex and the RM16 million bridge connecting town and the villages around Sungai Damit areas is timely and most welcome. However, there are a few things that need to be clarified,” the former Barisan Nasional MP said in a statement yesterday.
He was referring to the RM16 million bridge and the construction of a multi-million ringgit sports complex in Tamparuli announced by Musa this week.
The bridge over the Tuaran River is meant to provide easy access to the people living around the Pekan Nabalu areas to reach Tuaran via Kiulu, besides providing an alternative route from Tuaran to Ranau.
The second bridge was to span the Kiulu River which would have connected Kiulu with Pekan Nabalu.
“Now there will only be one bridge, at a cost of RM16 million. Initially RM18 million for two bridges. Something is just not right here,” Bumburing pointed out.
The MP, who is well-versed with the projects having been the Pasok Momogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko) deputy president while still in the BN, said he had personally handed over applications to the prime minister for these two proposed bridges in 2011.
“We (all BN MPs) were asked by the PM himself to submit to him two applications for major projects in every parliamentary constituency,” Bumburing added.
He said the Public Works Department had done their preliminary study on these two proposed projects and based on the assurance by the prime minister, the federal government would undertake to implement these projects.

Urgent need for better infrastructure
However, there is no news from the prime minister or any relevant authority on the said projects, he said.
“With the announcement by Musa, is the state government now taking responsibility by providing funds to undertake the implementation of the Sungai Damit bridge, and also what happened to the other Kiulu Bridge?” Bumburing asked.
The MP, who quit Upko and BN last year and formed pro-Pakatan Rakyat platform Pakatan Perubahan Sabah, also pointed to other infrastructure projects that were urgently needed in the district such as the Topokon-Gontung road which was in a poor state.
“I have personally brought Shafie Apdal on a drive along the Gontung road to see the condition of the road and the number of people that would benefit,” he said.
“Until today, even with the announcement by Musa, I still considered these as promises unfulfilled.”
“With regards to the sport complex; this should have been completed a long time ago. The project was approved when I was still the State Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports,” Bumburing disclosed.
According to him, a contractor has been appointed and RM1 million had already been spent but the projects was stopped soon after he left the ministry.
“We want to know the status of the contractor that was appointed and carried out the initial work. Along these lines, we call upon the government to implement these two projects with transparency, not by negotiated or direct tender,” Bumburing said.
He also questioned the timing of the announcement by Musa, saying that, this is an election promise as the general election is now just around he corner.

    7. The RCI will investigate the number of immigrants in Sabah who were issued blue identity cards or citizenship, and whether this was issued to immigrants based on the law.

      Delete
    8. In political terms, Najib has stolen the Opposition's thunder yet again. By showing that he is listening to Sabahans, and by giving them what they have been asking for so many years, he has taken away the Opposition's biggest request and granted it to the people of Sabah.

      Delete
    9. Pakatan, meanwhile, predictably attacked the commission, claiming that the RCI was "toothless" and "too late". The Opposition is naturally upset that the RCI would rob Pakatan of one of its key demands in the lead up to GE 13. Yet Sabahans have Najib to thank for listening to their views and for making the RCI a reality.

      Delete
    10. The Prime Minister's strong political will to deal with this contentious issue is expected to gain the confidence and trust of the people, and the federal Government's seriousness in tackling the matter will help BN in maintaining its stronghold Sabah in GE 13.

      Delete
    11. Pakatan, on the other hand, is relying on empty promises and its failed defection strategy to get a toehold in the state.

      Delete
    12. Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim boasted that he would engineer a wave of defections from BN in Sabah – but unfortunately for Anwar and for Pakatan, the promised flood of defections turned out to be a minor trickle instead.

      Delete
    13. Only a couple of BN leaders of any note have signed up to Anwar's camp in the past few months. Perhaps he should realise that courting opportunistic defectors in Sabah is a negative approach to winning the people's support. Pakatan cannot 'buy' all the votes in Sabah, let alone Malaysia.

      Delete
    14. In July, Anwar was beside himself with glee over the defections to Pakatan of Wilfred Mojilip Bumburing and Datuk Lajim Ukin. This, Anwar cried, would be the key to Pakatan taking Sabah.

      Delete
    15. Sadly, the voters were less excited because they sensed that the two men had defected not because they were in tune with the aspirations of the nation, but because they sensed an opportunity for more power.

      Delete
    16. And the duo confirmed this within days when they revealed that rather than pledged their unqualified support to Pakatan they would both set up their own parties that will demand a big slice of the pie in return for their 'loyalty'.

      Delete
    17. With its defection strategy in shambles Pakatan Rakyat has turned desperate in its bid to find some support in Sabah and Sarawak. In September, it resorted to an ill-thought pledge, promising the moon to voters in these states that the coalition has no hopes of fulfilling.

      Delete
    18. Labelled as the important-sounding 'Kuching Declaration', the seven-point pledge appealed to voters' desire for autonomy without actually offering anything concrete.

      Delete
    19. Pakatan's attempt at getting some toehold in BN's bastions of Sabah and Sarawak will fail as voters prefer to choose on the basis of real policies and track record, not empty promises.

      Delete
    20. After all, Pakatan's abysmal track record in the states it rules is there for all to see. The coalition's desperate strategy will therefore have little or no impact on the growing wave of support for BN.

Apa pilihan Lajim?

    ReplyDelete
  77. LAJIM DAN BUMBURING SUDAH TIADA PILIHAN

Bumburing dan Lajim BUKAN faktor kekuatan BN di Sabah. Bumburing dan Lajim pernah bersama dalam PBS sebagai ADUN dan Menteri Penuh dalam Kabinet Negeri Sabah era PBS. Lajim sekali lagi menjadi Menteri Penuh selepas BN mengalahkan PBS dalam PRU11. Manakala Bumburing (BN-UPKO) KALAH di tangan Edward Linggu (PBS...kini menyertai STAR).

    ReplyDelete

  99. PAS’ intention to make its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang prime minister should the opposition pact win the general election shows that they are squabbling among themselves.
