“The State Government has failed Sabah’s founding fathers in failing to commemorate the 49th anniversary of Sabah Independence on 31 August” said Melvin Jaikul Datuk Imbayan, STAR Keningau Division Vice-Chief while overseeing the preparations for the 49th commemoration by STAR Sabah to be held in Keningau on 31st.
Efforts of Founding Fathers on Independence Not Acknowledged
Sabah’s history and independence cannot and should not be denied by the current State government. Why should the independence of Sabah on 31 August 1963 be relegated to the annals of history and covered up?
Similarly, the efforts of Bapa Kemerdekaan Sabah, Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun, and Tun Fuad Stephens and other founding fathers, who were instrumental in securing Sabah’s independence should not be ignored or belittled.
By failing to commemorate and celebrate Sabah’s independence, the State government has openly failed to acknowledge the efforts of our founding fathers.
State Government Should Commemorate and Celebrate
The independence of Sabah should be openly acknowledged and celebrated. The State government should commemorate and celebrate Sabah Independence Day every 31st August.
It is sad that the State government has failed to acknowledge and commemorate the 49th anniversary of Sabah Independence this year. It is sadder still that none of the BN leaders have voiced their acknowledgement of Sabah’s independence and the efforts of our founding fathers. Saddest of all, the BN leaders and State government will be celebrating the 55th anniversary of Malaya’s independence on a big scale with the full works for celebrations thrown in including parades and fireworks.
If not for the voices and efforts of the opposition, it would appear that Sabah Independence Day would have been forgotten.
The early Sabah governments have always recognized Sabah Independence Day and have issued commemorative coins to mark Sabah’s independence as can be seen in the attached photo.
The current State government should take affirmative actions to acknowledge Sabah’s independence and put the facts of history right and take any positive action to commemorate or recognize Sabah Independence Day, more so as 1st September 2012 will mark the commencement of the golden jubilee year of Sabah Independence.
As for the people of Sabah, all are invited for the commemoration of the 49th anniversary of Sabah Independence on 31 August at the Keningau Town Padang starting at 7.30 am. On the commemoration, Melvin said that STAR Sabah also wish to thank the relevant authorities in particular the police and the district council for granting the relevant approvals for the various events to be held.
Many Sabahans did not know that Sabah is actually only in the 49th year of independence.
DeleteOpposition try to play the issued of Sabah independent to make confuse of people especially to Sabahans.
DeleteJadi berhati-hati dengan semua ini. Faham-fahamlah cuba mencari publisiti jadi semua isu pun jadi mainan.
DeleteNever forget our history and the contribution of our forefathers to Sabah's independence.
DeleteHe has done a lot for Sabah, be in education or investment opportunities.
DeleteNever doubt the government effort in making sure that Sabah is well protected.
Deletekalau generasi sekarang sudah kurang jelas tentang sejarah sebenar, apa lagi generasi akan datang.
Deletemissing the point. 55 is Malayan independence NOT MALAYSIAN independence.. We amust celebrate 49 years as a country as a united malaysia and NOT a 1 Malaya. so dont be confused 16 September 1963 is IS MALAYSIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY let the peninsularites celebrate Malaya Day but for us its the whole picture and the whole facts that Malaya had to have Sabah and Sarawak to make it MALAYSIA
DeleteWe still have Malaysia day on the 16th of September.
ReplyDelete16th September is the day that four countries- Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak dan Singapore get together to form Malaysia. We should commemorate that date.
DeleteOf course we do.
DeleteMemang meriah pun sambutan Hari Malaysia. Ini bermakna kita masih hidup aman bah, hehe
DeleteHopefully the fact that Sabah is in the 49th year of independence while Malaysia is in the 55th will be remembered in the future. Next year we will celebrate Sabah's 50th year and Malaysia's 56th year on Hari Merdeka.
Percayalah:)
DeleteThe Following is Tunku’s own writings below on the background story behind the formation of Malaysia. Maybe then people will understand the value of 31st August 1957 over this entire region. Taken from his book ‘Political Awakening’, I hope people will be awakened to the fact that petty arguments over which date is more important could never replace the insurmountable force of a united country and its unified people.
ReplyDeleteThe year 1959 was one of the most successful and delightful years in the history of Malaya. Everything seemed to go well for the nation. So well it was that I as a leader of the party and the Government had a foreboding that something might go wrong because the year was much too good to be true. I declared myself ‘the happiest Prime Minister in the world’. Money poured into the country, business boomed, new industries grew up, and there was complete peace and harmony in the country.
DeleteAnd curiously enough it was a year which we could say was almost free of serious crimes, our fame spread abroad, and we made many new friends, and enhanced our reputation, so much so that the people in our neighboring States of Singapore, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei made contacts with us with the request to join the Federation of Malaya. After all, according to them, the administration of all these States was run by the same British administration. Therefore it was easy, and only natural for these States to merge with Malaya.

DeleteIn October 1961, the Malayan Parliament supported unanimously my proposal to form Malaysia. Umno at its meeting on November 4, 1961 in Kuala Lumpur agreed with the formation of the new State of Malaysia (Melayu Raya). This led me to London where I had a profitable discussion with the British Prime Minister who declared his support for the formation of Malaysia.
He suggested, however, that before we could make an official decision we had to ascertain the views of the people living in these territories of Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo and Brunei. A commission would be appointed by both governments to ascertain the views of the people. Britain should be allowed to continue to maintain its defense base in Singapore.
DeleteAs a step towards a merger, Sabah formed Usno (United Sabah National Organisation) under the leadership of Tun Datu Mustapha Datu Harun. Usno represented the people of all races and tribes living in Sabah. The Sultan of Brunei, Sir Omar Saifuddin, came to Kuala Lumpur to tell me how pleased he was that Malaysia was to be formed, and I could expect Brunei to be the first to join in. Me Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore was all the time behind this move because Britain would not give Singapore freedom except with Malaysia. Sarawak on the whole was most enthusiastic., but the people had internal problems. There were many communists in Sarawak, and there were some members in the Chinese community who preferred to remain under British rule. But it was agreed that we should not rush inot this new Malaysia concept without having first a referendum to ascertain the views of all the people.

DeleteIn July, 1961 the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association held a meeting in Singapore to discuss the formation of Malaysia. At this meeting Sabah and Sarawak proposed that a solidarity consultative committee be formed immediately to discuss Malaysia. Prominent members of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association consisting of the representatives of all the States of Malaya, the Borneo States, Singapore and Brunei were appointed.
DeleteA memorandum was put up in Singapore on February 3, 1962 signed by the chairman of this committee, (Tun) Ahmad Fuad (Donald Stephens). Brunei was represented by Datuk Setia Pengiran Ali as observer. The Sabah representative was (Tun) O.K.K. Datu Mustapha Datu Harun; Sarawak: Teo Cheng Hoe; the Federation of Malaya: Khir Johari; and Singapore: Lee Kuan Yew.
DeleteThe Cobold Commission took two months to carry out their work, and they received many thousands of letters from associations, from tribes, from individuals and political parties, from workers’ unions, religious organizations, and members of councils/assemblies. Everybody who wished to offer their opinion either for or against Malaysia, was invited to send in their letters to this Cobold Commission. In June 1962 the commission submitted their report, favouring Malaysia. As a result of the unanimous support, a delegation of representatives from the States of Singapore, Sarawak and British North Borneo were invited to meet the British Government’s representative, at a conference with Lord Landowne, the Minister for the Colonies, as the chairman, and Tun Abdul Razak as a deputy.
ReplyDeletehari kemerdekaan pun dah jadi bahan politik.
pekara ini tidak harus dijadikan bahan politik.
Deleteperayaan Hari Malaysia memang isu besar, tapi bukanlah politik isu.
DeleteSANDAKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is happy with the cooperation given by the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman, to the federal government.
ReplyDelete“Barisan Nasional has proven its capability not only as a political party but also as a government,” Najib said when officiating the joint opening of the Umno Zone 5 – Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Batu Sapi, Beluran and Libaran divisions – delegates meeting at Dewan Sri Libaran here yesterday.
Betul jugalah. Tapi tak dinafikan masih perlu penambahbaikan tau:)
DeleteNajib said one vital foundation of the success was the close working relation between the federal and state governments and he was thankful for having a Chief Minister like Musa who enhanced state-federal relations.
ReplyDelete“Good state-federal relations have brought development to the state and any differences in views are always discussed to find solutions that serve the interest of the people of Sabah,” Najib who is Umno president said to a rousing applause from the more than 35,000 delegates and supporters attending the event.
Najib also said that every time he came to Sabah he received an overwhelming welcome and was confident that they would cast their vote to BN when the time comes.
ReplyDelete“Umno is strong in Sabah. If this is the picture, we will get resounding support from the people here,’’ he said and urged all partymen to work hard and not look at ethnicity as it would divide and weaken the party.
Even more PM said Umno succeeded in uniting everyone and because it chose leaders based on their ability to deliver and not because the person was a Bugis or Javanese or from any other ethnic background.
ReplyDelete“We choose him as an Umno leader because of his qualities, we don’t care what ethnic group he belongs to,’’ he said, adding that such methods of divide and rule used by past colonial masters would only weaken the party.
“We must move forward as Umno,’’ he reminded members while urging them to uphold the principles of the party and to be prepared to sacrifice for the party.
PM also added:
ReplyDelete“We don’t need selfish members who want to fill their pockets and protect their positions. These people can leave,’’ adding leaders come and go but the party stayed.
Najib also strongly urged party workers to work with other BN components to ensure that Sabah remains as BN’s “Fixed Deposit State”.
The Prime Minister called on the people to give the Barisan Nasional another five years for it to enhance its development programmes under the Government Transformation Programme.
The opposition were just making promises on paper and they will not be able to deliver.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, the number 11 is playing in the Prime Minister’s mind as he gave a broad hint that elections could be held by year-end.
Though not coming right out with a clear indication, Najib said that this year was unique as his often mentioned favourite number – 11 – figured in many events marking the year.
just be grateful with what the state government has given to u
ReplyDeleteTerlalu tamak pun susah juga kan. Tapi terlalu bersyukur pun susah juga. Jadi kita patut bijak menilai.

"Sabah’s history and independence cannot and should not be denied by the current State government. Why should the independence of Sabah on 31 August 1963 be relegated to the annals of history and covered up?"
ReplyDeleteif Sabah history denied, then why must we celebrate Malaysia Day??
ndependence Day is a national day of Malaysia commemorating the independence of the Federation of Malaya from British colonial rule in 1957, celebrated on August 31 each year. But Malaysia was formed on 16 September, 1963 together by Federation of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.
ReplyDeleteThe formation of the Federation of Malaysia was then announced on September 16, 1963 as Malaysia Day. The nationwide Independence Day celebration is still held on August 31, the original independence date of Malaya, while Malaysia Day was a public holiday only in East Malaysia. However, this has caused some minor discontent among East Malaysians in particular since it has been argued that celebrating the national day on August 31 is too Malaya-centric. In 2009, it was decided that starting 2010, Malaysia Day would be a nationwide public holiday in addition to Hari Merdeka on August 31
ReplyDeleteNever mine, Sabah and Sarawak still can celebrate the Malaysian Day.
ReplyDeleteBetul tu.
ReplyDeleteTrue. 1malaysia spirit is a path to success.

ReplyDeleteThere are somethings Sabahans need to know.
ReplyDeleteIf only we can learn from history the actual facts of the unknown.
ReplyDeleteIt is advisable for the Ministry of Education to include these facts for the sake of our generation.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone who doesn't know how old is Sabah?
ReplyDeleteI think there are some tricks played here on the mind of the Sabahans.
ReplyDeleteOnly to cause confusion for the people.
ReplyDeletePlease study the development of Sabah history properly.
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be outstanding improvement in Sabah construction industry.
ReplyDeletePeace must reign in Sabah wheither the oppositions like it or not.
ReplyDeleteIrrespective of history background the fact remains the same....we are one.
ReplyDeleteCM has contributed to the rapid development of Sabah so far.
ReplyDeleteLet's celebrate together....
ReplyDeleteThis shouldn't be a political issue at all.
ReplyDeleteIt is appropriate to appreciate what the state government has done so far.
ReplyDeleteThanks to CM Musa Aman ;)
DeleteIt is not by chance that Malaysia has been able to come this far in her 55 years of nationhood. It has a lot to do with being blessed with a multi-ethnic community whose strength is unity in diversity, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Ongkili.
ReplyDeleteThe Kota Marudu MP said, today’s generation inherited a united and progressive country from the country’s political founding fathers who resolved that the success and greatness of the nation must be founded on national unity.
ReplyDeleteDr. Ongkili pointed out that Malaysia today is the envy of other nations in the region and globally, not only for its unity and peace but progress that was able to take place because of these vital prerequisites.
ReplyDeleteHe also said the Barisan Nasional government had a proven track record of delivering development and other promises of making a better Malaysia for the future.
“The transformation programmes of the government championed by Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Razak are serious commitments to achieve developed nation status and hence a better Malaysia.
ReplyDelete“However, making Malaysia great is a partnership task of the government and the people of all strata. We must forever treasure these,’ he said, adding that Merdeka Day was thus a celebration of the country’s achievement, an occasion that each and every Malaysian has every reason to be joyous about.
“After achieving independence through Malaysia in 1963, there have been a lot of changes and developments. In 1963, Kota Kinabalu was not like this; the facilities are way better now. Every district in Sabah now can be reached by roads, even Long Pasia which not so long ago was only accessible by air,” said Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Minister of Agriculture & Food Industry Datuk Yahya Hussin.
ReplyDelete“All these are the proofs that Barisan National government is keeping its promises,” he added.
Groups should stop confusing the people about the correct date of Malaysia’s independence.
ReplyDeleteDeputy Chief Minister Datuk Yahya Hussin said that groups arguing whether Aug 31 or Sept 16 should be celebrated as National Day were motivated by selfishness.
Yahya said Malaysia’s founding fathers had agreed that Aug 31 be Merdeka Day and that Malaysia’s formation be celebrated on Sept 16.
ReplyDelete“I think that should be enough.
“There is no need to further confuse the people,” he told reporters when announcing details of the state-level Malaysia Day celebrations here.
Sabah and Sarawak joined the federation on Sept 16, 1963, after gaining independence from the British on Aug 31 the same year while Malaya gained its independence on Aug 31, 1957.
ReplyDeleteYahya also said that the opposition could not say that the government never bothered to remember history as the state has always celebrated Sept 16 annually, as the issue had been discussed repeatedly over the years and suspect that those who continued making it a national issue possess a different mentality.
ReplyDeleteWe must appreciate the history of the independence struggle so that we are able to contribute to success in the future.
DeleteBe in the development, or other major components for the growth of Sabah, he has managed to do his best.
DeleteHe is a capable leader.
ReplyDeleteDia memang seorang pemimpin yang berwawasan.
DeleteThe state government is always making its people as its first priority.
ReplyDeleteMemang betul tu, sokongan padu harus ada.
DeleteNever make any speculation on anything if you don't know anything.
ReplyDeleteBuang yang keruh ambil yang jernih.
ReplyDeleteGood advice.
ReplyDeleteIt was acknowledged but many of people enjoy their work and when having one day public holiday they go for other activity instead of goin celebrate the independce day.
ReplyDeletehopefully Sabah Independence Day will always be celebrated on a big scale with the full works for celebrations thrown in including parades and fireworks so that it would not have been forgotten forever by the next generations.
